The opportunity
A founder-stage product needs judgment about what to build, what to simplify, and what must be proven before the next commitment. This engagement provides independent product and engineering advice for a defined workstream, not a second management structure.
You will connect customer needs with architecture, delivery capacity, reliability, security, and business priorities. The output is concrete: decisions, roadmaps, technical reviews, operating practices, or evaluation materials that the founder and team can use. Executive and personnel decisions remain with the company.
What you will do
- Review the current product, customer evidence, architecture, and delivery constraints for the agreed area.
- Translate competing requests into a prioritized roadmap with clear dependencies, tradeoffs, and acceptance evidence.
- Assess reliability, security, data, integrations, and intelligence readiness; distinguish urgent risks from longer-term improvements.
- Recommend practical quality, release, incident, or delivery practices that fit the actual team and product.
- Prepare decision briefs that explain options, consequences, ownership, and the evidence behind a recommendation.
- Develop hiring scorecards, interview rubrics, or technical evaluations when included in the engagement.
- Leave a clear handoff so recommendations can become owned work rather than a presentation that goes unused.
Experience that fits
- Demonstrated product and technical judgment in an early-stage or resource-constrained software business.
- The ability to move between customer problems, commercial priorities, and architecture without losing the connection.
- Experience diagnosing delivery or reliability problems and proposing changes proportionate to the risk.
- Concise written communication and a track record of recommendations that led to shipped or measurable outcomes.
- Comfort advising a founder while working within clear decision and execution boundaries.
Helpful, not essential
- Independent or fractional advisory experience across multiple clients.
- Experience with contractor software, workflow products, or business-critical operational data.
- Examples of improving technical hiring, engineering review, or production-readiness practices.
What success looks like
- The team can explain its priorities, the evidence behind them, and what will make each milestone acceptable.
- Material technical and delivery risks have a clear owner and an actionable response.
- Founder bottlenecks are reduced through better decisions and documentation, without ambiguous authority.
How we will work together
This is an independent, bounded advisory engagement. Scope, deliverables, access, review points, and the decision owner are agreed in writing. It does not itself establish an executive position, employee-management responsibility, or authority to make customer or company commitments.
Compensation & engagement terms
Advisory fees and payment milestones are agreed against the defined scope before the engagement begins. Any additional implementation work requires an agreed scope and terms.
